Parameters of this construction

2 parameters with default value and limits, adjustable in the editor.

ParameterDefaultRangeNote
Bottom curl allowancecupBottomCurl8 mm0–15 mmSidewall extension below the cup bottom, curled around the bottom disc's skirt; measured along the slant height.
Rim curl allowancecupRimCurl5 mm0–10 mmSidewall extension above the cup rim, rolled into the rim; measured along the slant height.

Assembly

Place the sidewall around a conical mandrel and glue the seam. Insert the bottom disc, curl the bottom allowance around its skirt, and compress; roll the rim outward.

Grain direction

Grain direction pending: Along the circumference, the rim and bottom roll more easily; along the generatrix, the wall is stiffer (check with the cup manufacturer).

Frequently asked questions about this template

Are the diameters inside dimensions?

For this sidewall, the diameters are outside dimensions of the finished cup at the rim and bottom. Height runs from bottom to rim. Curl allowances are added only in the blank. Do not use flat contour diameters as cup dimensions; measure or define the finished shape.

Is the bottom disc included?

No. This ID describes the sidewall with bottom curl allowance. For assembly, insert a separate bottom disc with a suitable skirt and curl the sidewall around it. The disc is not part of the shown export. Agree on its fit and connection to the sidewall with the cup manufacturer using a sample.

What do the two curved markings mean?

They mark the bottom and rim of the finished cup before curling. The contour extends beyond them at the top and bottom by the respective allowances. The markings are annotation lines, not creases. When handing off the production file, the manufacturer must know their meaning and decide whether they are needed in its process.

Can I calculate a nearly cylindrical cup?

The top diameter must be at least 2 mm larger than the bottom diameter. The model also limits blank radius and total angle. A very small diameter difference can therefore fail despite valid individual dimensions. Another sidewall construction suits a cylindrical shape; do not force the cone template for this purpose.

How do I choose the rolled rim and glue seam?

The seam is an input dimension; the two curl allowances are separate parameters. Allowances are measured along the slant height. Their starting values document a calculated example, not a machine setting. Check gluing, curling, and bottom disc fit together, because a geometrically fitting contour does not yet confirm the connection in the real material.
